Keynote - Assumptions: Killers of First Dates and Software Projects Around The World
Assumptions are the conclusions we draw based on our own prior experience.  We often can't tell the difference between our assumptions and facts, and when acted upon, assumptions don't make good results in technology, nor do they bode well in romance.  Kellyn and Tim are techie geeks with a certain amount of good and bad experience in both technology and romance, and they share those experiences with this presentation comparing a blind first date between two techies.

P19 How Hot Is My Data? Leveraging Automatic Database Optimization (ADO) Features in Oracle 12c Database For Dramatic Performance Improvements
Oracle Database Release 12cR1’s new Automatic Database Optimization (ADO) features now make it possible to automatically locate data within the most appropriate storage tier and at the appropriate compression level based on its usage patterns. Oracle DBA and Oracle University instructor Jim Czuprynski will demonstrate how to take advantage of these features to speed queries and DML while still saving crucial Tier 0 and Tier 1 storage space.

Through presentations and online demonstrations, this session illustrate how to:
- Automatically gather your database’s hottest, lukewarm, and ice-cold data into appropriate storage structures for most and least frequently accessed data using Oracle 12c’s Heat Maps
- Automatically migrate your data to more appropriate storage structures when its access patterns change over time
- Improve query and DML performance against heavily-updated segments versus read-mostly segments
- Monitor access patterns of “hot” versus “cold” data to insure that the appropriate ADO policies have been deployed

1. Automatic Database Optimization (ADO): Architecture and Terminology
2. Just How “Hot” is Hot? Using Heat Maps
3. Setting Up Heat Maps for Maximum Effectiveness
4. Storage Tiering Concepts
5. Applying Compression to Lukewarm, Cold, and Frigid Data
6. Monitoring ADO Policies vs. Expected Effectiveness
7. Conclusions

P56 DBaaS- Database as a Service in a DBA’s World
DBaaS, (Database as a Service) is a newer EM12c cloud feature that has many DBAs scratching their heads and wondering what it’s all about and how it fits in their changing world as we head to the cloud. DBaaS, especially with Database 12c will have DBAs focus less on building databases, but more on managing cloud environments. The DBA will only set up resource allocation, privileges and limits for users to request databases via the EM12c Self Service Portal. This session will offer the DBA the opportunity to get a clear view of this important aspect of our future in the cloud and begin to allocate their valuable time to the challenges that really interest them.

P97 How to create your own reports using the Dynamic Performance views, Statspack and Automatic Workload Repository (AWR)
The Oracle Database is well instrumented to log performance data. This information is easy to access using the Dynamic Performance Views. Most tools aimed at analysing Oracle performance are based on these views.
Two well-known tools from Oracle are Statspack (free) and Automatic Workload Repository (requires a license).
The presentation describes some of the most interesting Dynamic Performance Views and their counterparts in the Statspack and AW repositories, and gives some examples on how you may use them to create your own reports. Examples: current top resource consumers, resource and wait trend analyses, analysing locking issues after the fact.
The presentation does not cover how to use the standard Statspack and AWR reports.

P50 An Open Source Bare-Metal Recovery Solution for Exadata
Oracle supply documentation for bare-metal “restore” of Exadata compute nodes, but the approach involves “rebuilding” the server from a base install. This is a valid approach to recovering a system, however, it requires knowledge of modifications since the installation. Oracle also mention use of writing compressed tar archives to NFS as an off-host backup solution. This has notable limitations. Relax and Recovery (ReaR) combined with rsync (or many other backup solutions) provides a method to perform complete bare-metal restore returning the system to the state at the time of the last backup. There will be a focus on the specifics of Exadata compute nodes, however, the approach is applicable to any Linux host.

P170 Measure Once, Cut Twice
“Measure Twice, Cut Once” is a reminder that careful planning yields
better gratification than going too quickly into operations that can’t
be undone. Sometimes, however, it’s better to Measure Once, Cut Twice.
It’s one of the secrets behind how carpenters hang square cabinets in
not-so-square kitchens. And it’s one of the secrets behind how
developers write applications that are easy to fix when they cause
performance problems in production use. The key is to know which details
you can plan for directly, and which details you simply can’t know and
therefore have to defend yourself against. In this session, Cary will
discuss some aspects of software development where flexible design is
more important than detailed planning, using woodworking analogies for
inspiration. He will describe some particular flexibilities that your
software needs, and he’ll describe how to create them.

P3 Getting Real Business Value from OBIEE and Oracle Data Mining
Using Higher Education as a real-life example, we will show how using Oracle Data Science can deliver significant insights into student performance and applications. This project uses Oracle Advanced Analytics Option to discover patterns in student behaviour. OBIEE was then used to present detailed analysis incorporating the data mining models developed using Oracle Data Miner. The presentation will demonstrate how Universities can protect their income by predicting which students are most likely to withdraw early from their courses. We will also explain how all organizations can benefit from Oracle Advanced Analytics and Oracle OBIEE, all you need to have is the right question!

P63 RDBMS Forensics: Troubleshooting Using ASH
Arthur C. Clarke wrote that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." This has been proven true in many technologies, and it makes troubleshooting of that technology seem like art.

But it is not art, it is process, and the intent of this presentation is to use two case studies (i.e. resolving ORA-03136 "connection lost" error) to demonstrate that process, and also to show how components such as AWR and ASH, typically thought of as "performance tuning" tools, are also useful diagnostic tools. Attendees to this presentation will learn a forensic, empirical approach to trouble-shooting and also see a demonstration of a complex troubleshooting task following a non-intuitive but empirically sound resolution.

WIT - Women In Technology
It is time to think about the gender gap in technology in a new way. The representation of women in computer science and engineering has been declining over the last few decades.  Yes, it's hard to believe, but this has become center stage in America with Sheryl Sandberg's book, "Lean In" as well as numerous recent introductions to education initiatives to market tech careers to young women who may not have realized the opportunity previously.

The solution to this persistent problem is to focus on the needs of individual technical women on a personal and professional level -  We need to introduce technical education to young women before stereotypes impact their choices and media and life's demands hold them back from the field.

This Luncheon Session Will:

1.  Introduce Concepts for Professional Networking-  Social media, conferences, professional networking, career opportunities and what strengths we can draw from and what opportunities we have to improve on to succeed.

2. Early education initiatives and how to positively overcome stereotypes and unconscious bias that impacts our career goals.  Many of these are introduced to women when they are very young, so it's a challenge that we can learn to overcome through a network of support through mentors and guidance from our peers.

3. Introduction to tools available and guidance to building a road map for personal advancement and career objectives based on individual definition of success.  It's never one size fits all.  Each woman has different goals, different demands and their road map should reflect this.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database can be used either standalone, or as part of the Exalytics product bundle, to provide an in-memory mid-tier data cache for OBIEE. In this session, we look at how you can deploy TimesTen as an "analytic sandbox database" under the control of the BI team, with your own data model, indexing and column-store optimization. We'll see how TimesTen supports more concurrent users and returns data faster than a regular disk-based database, and we'll look at modeling techniques that permits more agile, end-user focused development when you've got your own mid-tier database to work with.

P169 Why You Can’t See Your Real Performance Problems
Reflecting across nearly 20 years of solving Oracle performance problems, Cary Millsap has recognized a single pattern of behavior that is the dominant reason for failure in all the projects he has witnessed. In almost every case he has seen, failures in diagnosing and repairing performance problems have been caused by unrecognized skew in diagnostic data. This presentation shows several examples that illustrate why skew is such a pervasive problem for performance analysts.

P35 Something Old, Something New: Leveraging Oracle 12c’s Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) Features for Improved Database Performance
Oracle Database Release 12cR1 introduced dramatically new capabilities for Information Lifecycle Management (ILM). Oracle DBA and Oracle University instructor Jim Czuprynski will delve into how best to leverage these transformative features to improve query and DML performance in an Oracle 12cR1 environment.

Through presentations and online demonstrations, this session will explore how best to:
- Leverage different storage tiers for inactive and active data to increase query performance via 12c’s In-Database Archiving (IDA) features
- Store past (and future!) data within the same table simultaneously via 12c’s Temporal Validity (TV) features without having to load or unload old and/or new data
- Dramatically increase application accessibility to your most crucial data without ever interrupting DML activity by leveraging Oracle 12c’s Online Move Partition (OMP) features to create, combine, split, and move data between different partitions of a partitioned table
Via live demonstrations against an Oracle 12cR1 database instance, Jim will explore 12c’s ILM features as well as provide SQL*Plus scripts, code examples, and Enterprise Manager 12c screen shots so any attendee can immediately begin to take advantage of these features.

1. Information Lifecycle Management (ILM): Architecture and Terminology
2. In-Database Archiving (IDA) Concepts
3. Leveraging Storage Tiers for IDA Data
4. Temporal Validity (TV) Concepts
5. Using Online Move Partition (OMP) For Seamless DML

It is one thing to design and code the “happy flow” of your automated business processes and services. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want (or expect) to occur in your processes and services. This session will dive into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g using a case study based on an ordering business process. First the session investigates what can go wrong in automated processes and services. Then it categorizes these situations and dives into the mechanisms Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite offer to handle these different scenarios. These mechanisms include Retry and Throttling capabilities of Oracle Service Bus, BPEL activities such as Throw and Catch activities, and SOA Suite's fault handling framework. The session will wrap up by introducing a generic fault handling framework for technical faults used in a real-life project that is realized using a Java fault handler and SOA Suite’s fault handling framework.

P85 MySQL Replication and MySQL Utilities – including demo!
Replication enables data from one MySQL database server (the master) to be replicated to one or more MySQL database servers (the slaves).

The target uses for replication in MySQL include:
- Scale-out solutions
- Data security
- Analytics
- Long-distance data distribution
- Upgrade software/hardware with minimal downtime

First we will look into the architecture of replication inside MySQL, after this we will look at use cases for replication and also investigate our new series of tools to manage huge replication typologies.

P64 Scaling To Infinity: Partitioning Data Warehouses on Oracle Database
Partitioning is known as a useful feature in very large databases, but how many people realize that it absolutely crucial to scalability and performance in data warehouses? The question, of course, is *why* is partitioning so crucial as well as *how* partitioning facilitates scalability and performance. All of the useful features for data warehousing in Oracle Database are facilitated by partitioning in a cycle described in the presentation as the "virtuous cycle". This presentation is the result of 15 years of practical data warehouse experience in numerous industries, each project pushing boundaries and limits, driven by ever-increasing business requirements. This presentation will provide straight answers and solid guidelines to understand how and why to utilize partition to ensure successful data warehouses, and attendees will go home with information they can use at work immediately.

P133 With Oracle Database 12c, there is all the more reason to use database PL/SQL
Fifty-year-old wisdom instructs us to expose the database to client-side code as a PL/SQL API and to securely hide the implementation details — tables, and the SQL statements that manipulate them. Yet many customers don’t do this. They claim that PL/SQL in the database cannot be patched without causing unacceptable downtime; that the datatypes for passing row sets between the client-side code and the database PL/SQL are cumbersome to use and bring performance problems; and that it is impractical to give each developer a private sandbox within which to make changes to database PL/SQL. This session describes changes brought by Oracle Database 12c that demolish each of these objections.

P176 Stop generating your user interface, start designing IT!
Process analysts and developers often make the mistake of equating user interaction with process flow. This is even more abundant now that we can execute the BPMN 2.0 models that we create. Analysts tend to model the user interaction in the process and then ask the developers to generate/build a screen for every human task that is modeled. This results in user interfaces that are hard to use, error prone and inflexible The resulting processes are very hard to change and too fine grained. Saving money in the project by generating a screen for every human task flow will cost the organization a lot of money. The reasons will be explained in this session. A better approach is to design the process flow and to design the user interface(s) separate from each other. This way you will be more flexible both to make process changes and to make interface changes. It will result in an user interface that people love to use and a business process that satisfies the needs of the business. This is illustrated with two cases.

P178 Semantic web solution
In a recent project for a Norwegian corporate client, we were asked to make a web solution with a semantic web backend from scratch. We look at the reasons for why a client would want a semantic web solution and why it makes sense for us providing one. We've delivered this solution and the client has come back to us and asked for another, similar solution for a different segment of their business. Our solution is based on open source components, Oracle databases, modeling and server components from TopQuadrant.

Technically, we'll briefly review what a semantic web solution is and introduce core terms like triple store, rdf, sparql, ontologies, inference and owl. In a similar fashion, we review core technological components and products underpinning our solution. We'll compare the semantic web appproach to a conventional rdms approach noting pros and cons and give advice on when to consider adopting a semantic web approach. Finally we'll go through the solution architecture and look at how we used a semantic web backend as a component in our solution, considering in particular security and performance.

P171 My Case for Agile Methods
Among many of my Oracle database administrator (DBA) friends, “agile” is
widely regarded as a dirty word, a synonym for “sloppy.” However,
adopting the principles of the Agile Manifesto (specifically, the
implementation of the Agile Manifesto called Extreme Programming, or XP)
has radically improved the commercial and technical success of projects
that I’ve worked on. Agile principles have enriched my entire life—not
just professionally, but personally. The contradiction between the
typical DBA’s perception of “agile” and my own is profound. This paper
describes my experiences with Agile values and my implementation of
them. I describe the circumstances that have led me to believe
passionately that it’s XP that will best assure the success of my
projects. I describe what has worked for me and why, and I describe what
hasn’t worked and why.

P181 Testing the Enterprise Layers - The A, B, C’s of
For years we’ve been exploring how to layer and separate our
code to test in isolation on the unit level. We’ve kept integration and
functional testing as a big ball of mud; jumping straight from unit to
full system testing. But can we apply some of the same lessons learned
from unit to integration testing?

This session explore the different technologies
within the Java Enterprise specification and see how our application can
be tested in isolation; layer for layer, module for module and
component for component.

Can we isolate and stay real at the same time? Does
mocks, stubs and test doubles have a place in the world of integration
testing? Are there other lessons to be learned?
